Aspiring entrepreneurs, aviation buffs, and job-seekers wanting a fresh start must read this personal, gritty tale of creating a complex airline from scratch, and quickly turning it into a $120,000,000 business. Readers are in the pilot’s seat for every twist and turn of this breathless, gut wrenching, and inspiring high speed flight. From outrageously edgy capital-sourcing to all-out combat with competitors and the FAA, you will experience what entrepreneurial hardball is really about. It will either scare the business suit off you or convince you that anything is possible. Anyone searching for greater opportunity can learn valuable lessons about determination, personal resourcefulness, ethical limits, and hope from this true story. Fueled by anger and obsessed with justice, I went from an unemployed Eastern Air Lines pilot to founder and CEO of the “Best Airline in America” in two years. Without a penny or a clue, I started KIWI International Air Lines by tapping into the deepest needs of my bruised, battered, and out-of-work Eastern Air Lines colleagues. In March 1989, the Eastern pilots, mechanics, and flight attendants walked out on strike. The company eventually failed, and 27,000 workers lost many of the best jobs in America. Some built new lives, some muddled through, and some never recovered. But several hundred invested their money and talents with me to create an exciting new career opportunity. In 1993, Conde Naste Traveler named KIWI “Best Airline in America.” By combining financial, professional, and personal resources we reclaimed our dignity from a collusive triad of industry, government, and union agendas that had done its best to destroy us. Instead of cowering and giving up, we joined forces, believed in each other, and overcame every obstacle in our path. The risky journey began in early 1990 as nothing but a crazy dream, and the first flight took off in September of 1992. When I left in 1995 KIWI was a $120,000,000 airline employing 1,200 workers with 15 Boeing 727s carrying 1,000,000 passengers a year, and poised for an IPO. This is a true story of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The narrative is straight from a contemporaneous journal I faithfully kept to preserve not only factual and chronological events, but also my real-time subjective impressions. The rest relies heavily on reams of internal documents, newspaper stories, TV interviews, and firsthand accounts of people who worked at, with, and around KIWI during and after my tenure. It details the reality of starting a complicated company with nothing, and describes the frustrating, never-ending quest for capital. The book reveals how easy it was to convince desperate people to invest precious retirement funds, and work for nothing during start-up. It shows how we used a tightly controlled market image and brazen public relations tactics to build a larger-than-life reputation that drove in capital and recruited highly placed allies like Richard Branson and Gov. Jim Florio. It also demonstrates how we cleverly won a life-threatening fare war with a giant competitor and beat the FAA when we were unfairly targeted. In the works for 20 years, this book details the joys and pains of many business, financial, governmental, & personal relationships that nursed, threatened, and cajoled KIWI into the air; made it a niche success; earned it every industry award; gave so many hope; then caused it to self-destruct for an entirely unanticipated reason.

When KIWIs Flew The Diary of a Mad Airline Entrepreneur eBook Bob Iverson

A valuable memory jogger and insight into the early days of the airline, which I missed. Not shy about "telling it like it is" from the business side of the company. Would have enjoyed some more operational details - where KIWI flew, why, how entered.. Reservations setup, customer service/gates/ticket counters. Interviews with former employees would have added flavor and more insight as to how the airline REALLY differed from the paradigm.. More photos of the people/ facilities/ airplanes advertising. Excerpts from press coverage both good and bad..... .
Well written and detailed in the aspects on which the author chose to focus.

When KIWIs Flew The Diary of a Mad Airline Entrepreneur eBook Bob Iverson Reviews

Well written and fast moving. The book offers entrepeneurial insight as well as an insider's perspective of a turbulent time in the airline industry.
Fascinating reading! It is a remarkable story and now a lasting piece of aviation history. Thank you Bob for providing me the opportunity be a part of your KIWI and Sky Trek journey. I was hoping that you would have expanded a bit deeper into Sky Trek but I guess that means a sequel should be on the way! I did not want this book to end.
Well written, a roller coaster story that has epic highs and dreadful lows. I enjoyed the groundwork that led to Kiwi becoming a real airline. I worked as a vendor to Kiwi back when they started, so I knew some of the people in the book. The only thing that was missing was the happy ending that needed to befall those miscreants that brought down a worthy effort to provide quality air travel.
